Coins are important things for they serve many purposes. For one, coins serve as historical accounts. This is why many collectors strive to obtain all kinds of coins from different countries because of its worth and face value. Surviving coins do not only reveal a lot about a nation’s history; rather it is also a form of art which can attract thousands of people’s attentions, particularly those who are collectors of coins that belong to a special edition.
Niue is a small self-governing country located in the South Pacific Ocean where around 1,600 citizens live in harmony and peaceful coexistence. Back in 2008, the pacific nation had decided to make a deal with New Zealand Mint to generate a set of gold and silver coins that can be used legally in the small island to purchase products and avail useful services in the hopes of promoting the small island’s tourism and increasing its funds. It has been confirmed that Niue will get a share for each coin sold by the privately owned company based in Auckland, New Zealand.
What makes the collectors’ edition produced by New Zealand Mint for Niue different from other forms of currencies that can be found all across the globe is that on one side of Niue’s coin, a familiar Disney character can be seen; while on its other side, Queen Elizabeth II can be found. Although this step taken by Niue in promoting its tourism and image is a bit surprising and unusual, this was not the first time that the small island country had featured fictional characters on its coins. Back in the year 2011, Niue proudly introduced their coins that featured Star Wars characters; and last 2013, it was able to feature Doctor Who characters through the help of NZ Mint.
At present, many collectors all around the world are purchasing the coins from Niue’s newly publicized collectors’ edition. This year, any interested buyer can collect coins that feature Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, Daisy Duck, and Donald Duck. After this release, it is expected that the Disney princesses will be the next characters featured on Niue’s coins. As of the moment, the officials involved in this project have a plan to feature the following fairytale princesses: Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and Snow White.
As what most people do not know, Niue, despite being a self-governing island country, is in free association with New Zealand. This is why Niue citizens also uses New Zealand dollar like those who live in New Zealand; however, due to the tourism and economic objectives set by the governing officials of Niue, the country is legally allowed to issue special edition coins.
According to Brent Hindman, the head sales of NZ Mint, Niue’s tourism industry had blossomed because of the newly released Disney coins. Because of it, Niue was able to raise people’s awareness of their small island located in the Pacific. It is, indeed, a smart strategy to use full-colored coins to pique the interest of the public.
